LOCAL & REGIONAL UPDATES
Water to six towns exceeds new limit for a ‘forever chemical’, NJ Spotlight: "The affected towns are South Plainfield, Edison, Metuchen, Woodbridge, Clark and Rahway, all served by the Park Avenue Treatment Plant in South Plainfield... Customers were told to use alternative sources of water if they have a severely compromised immune system; if they are feeding infants; are pregnant, or are considering having children. Boiling water does not remove the chemical..."
Major change in vote by mail leaves millions out, NJ Spotlight: "Probably the easiest way to vote is from home, and while New Jersey has increased opportunities for mail-in balloting over the past three years, changes in who gets ballots automatically have left many voters confused, particularly after last year’s highly unusual election conducted mostly by mail-in ballots."
Most counties have fewer early voting sites than N.J. will pay for, NJ Monitor: "Despite the state promising to reimburse counties for the costs of early polling sites, 15 of New Jersey’s 21 counties are planning to open fewer early polling places than the state is willing to pay for. Only one county, Mercer, is spending its own money to open an additional site."
NATIONAL UPDATES
What Democrats are still fighting over in the budget bill, Vox: "The reconciliation bill is meant to deliver on a key part of President Joe Biden’s agenda: making massive investments in social and climate programs. In response to Republican opposition to this platform, Democrats turned to the budget reconciliation process (which allows legislation to be passed by a simple majority vote) to enact Biden’s agenda... Negotiations hinge on getting two moderate senators — Manchin and Sinema — on board while making sure any of the cuts and changes they want don’t dilute progressive support."
Democrats Push Novel Taxes on Billionaires and Huge Corporations, NYTimes: "Senate Democrats rushed on Tuesday to nail down the details of a groundbreaking tax on billionaires’ wealth, part of an elaborate menu of tax increases to finance a significantly scaled-back bill that would strengthen the social safety net and address climate change".
As Murder Trial Begins in Ahmaud Arbery’s Killing, Family Worries About Impartiality of Jurors, Democracy Now: "...an update as jury selection began this week in the trial of three white men who fatally shot 25-year-old unarmed man Ahmaud Arbery while he was out for a jog last year".
