About Rutgers School of Social Work

Our Mission

Our mission is to develop and disseminate knowledge through social work research, education, and training that promotes social and economic justice and strengthens individual, family, and community well-being in this diverse and increasingly global environment of New Jersey and beyond.

Our Faculty

Our faculty members are a dynamic community of over 200 leaders--tenured professors advancing the field of social work through original, published research, and professors of teaching and professional practice and part time lecturers actively working in local communities and bringing those experiences into the classroom. Our Ph.D. faculty are ranked 3rd nationally in research productivity, including publications, citations and awards, by Academic Analytics.  Our dedicated staff members work on cutting edge research, training, student support, continuing education, alumni support and many other invaluable areas.

Our Students

Our student body is ethnically and economically diverse. Most of our students are recent college graduates, while others are looking to change careers or enhance their social work education. They are united by their pursuit of a rigorous academic experience and their commitment to social change.

Our Programs

We believe that students who are qualified for and passionate about a career in social work should have the ability to pursue one. That is why we provide our students with as much flexibility as possible by offering affordable BA, MSW, DSW, Ph.D. and continuing education programs at each of Rutgers' three campuses (Newark, New Brunswick and Camden). In addition to a full-time degree program, we offer evening and weekend options. Our programs aim to inspire and motivate students to pursue leadership roles in a variety of settings. All degree programs are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) Board of Accreditation (BOA).

Our Partnerships

To ensure that we have the greatest possible community impact, we maintain a host of partnerships with public agencies, local non-profit organizations, foundations and socially active corporations.

Our Impact

As one of the largest schools of social work in the country, our reach is vast. We train a cadre of nearly 1,600 professional social workers annually. Our graduates go on to work in government, the nonprofit sector and the corporate world, doing everything from counseling victims of abuse to leading human resources departments at private corporations. In addition to maintaining an extensive alumni network around the country, we leverage our many community partnerships to create change locally.
