Feds order state to restore funding cuts to poorest school districts, NJ Monitor: "The federal Department of Education has ordered New Jersey to restore millions of dollars in funding cuts the state made to 80 of its poorest school districts after lawmakers in 2018 changed how the state provides aid to local schools."
Bill protecting same-sex marriage moves forward in Assembly, NJ Monitor: "The Assembly Judiciary Committee Thursday unaninmously advanced a bill, A5367, that would write same-sex marriage protections into New Jersey law. The move comes as some LGBTQ leaders fear a U.S. Supreme Court that has shifted right could roll back rights for same-sex couples."
Bill expanding SNAP to more college students advances, NJ Monitor: "Assembly lawmakers took another step toward loosening work requirements for college students in need of nutritional assistance Monday."
NATIONAL UPDATES
Democrats’ $2 trillion spending plan in political peril as talks between Biden, Manchin appear to hit snag, Washington Post: "A push by Senate Democrats to pass a roughly $2 trillion tax-and-spending measure before Christmas appeared in dire political peril Wednesday, as talks soured between President Biden and Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) over the size and scope of the economic package."
If Congress Fails to Act, Monthly Child Tax Credit Payments Will Stop, Child Poverty Reductions Will Be Lost, CBPP: "If Congress fails to act, monthly Child Tax Credit payments will not be made on January 15, and many families will struggle to make ends meet. Moreover, failing to pass Build Back Better would take away the entire credit from many children who would no longer qualify at all & would cut the amount of the credit for millions more."
Temporary Safety Net Policies Prevented Mass Insurance Loss During the Pandemic, RAND: "New data from the Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (PDF), among others, show that these fears ultimately did not materialize. Several temporary emergency 'safety net' provisions enacted in 2020 built upon the Affordable Care Act to keep the number of insured people stable. Untangling which were most responsible for this steady state, amid extreme job losses, will help policymakers determine how to proceed as the pandemic continues."
