The 2021 gubernatorial election season in New Jersey promises to bring increased attention to key topics affecting the state's future. To reveal facts and insights crucial to voters and assist in determining the stakes and impact of the election, NJ Spotlight News will host a series of virtual conversations covering issues of importance around the state. New machines, new times to vote. Major changes in November election, NJ Spotlight: "Next month, the state will open its first true statewide early voting period, with voters able to cast ballots in person on machines... Those polling stations must be up and running from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays from Oct. 23 through Oct. 31."

New Jersey offers wage subsidies, signing bonuses in bid to fill jobs, NJ Monitor: "The new program, dubbed 'Return and Earn,' makes businesses with fewer than 100 employees eligible to receive up to $10,000 from the state in wage and job-training subsidies per eligible employee and prospective employees at those businesses eligible for a $500 signing bonus on their first paycheck."

Senate Republicans block funding bill, leaving government at the edge of a shutdown, WHYY: "The federal government is on the brink of a partial shutdown after Senate Republicans blocked debate on legislation that would have simultaneously funded the government and suspended the nation’s borrowing limit."

For Transgender Youth, Stigma Is Just One Barrier to Health Care, NY Times:
"Many obstacles prevent young transgender people from getting the health care they need, according to a recent study in the journal JAMA Pediatrics; these include stigma and discrimination from the health care system as well as legal, economic and social obstacles to obtaining gender-affirming care."

Housing Vouchers in Economic Recovery Bill Would Sharply Cut Homelessness, Housing Instability, CBPP: "...the vouchers — which we estimate would assist 1.7 million people when fully phased in... — would do more than any other housing policy in the legislation to reduce homelessness and other hardship for people who struggle most to afford a home."
