Understanding Tuition, Fees, and Other Costs of Attending Rutgers
Attending Rutgers, or any university, will have both direct and indirect costs, which typically include tuition, enrollment fees, housing expenses, costs for meal plans, books and class materials, transportation, and personal expenses.
Tuition is the cost charged by the university for taking courses, and is often based on the number of credits you take. At Rutgers, tuition varies based on school affiliation, campus, and program. After registering for courses, Rutgers issues students an online term bill each semester, which includes all tuition and fees.
Term bills list the tuition, fees, and other costs due after deducting for credits for loans and financial aid, such as scholarships, grants, and other items. Paying your term bill completes your enrollment for each semester. An interest-free payment plan option is available.
Paying for Your Rutgers Education
It is typical for students to piece together the funds to attend college through a variety of sources. Many students at Rutgers receive some form of financial assistance through grants/scholarships, loans, and/or work study, and then use a combination of personal or family contributions or outside funding to make up the difference after financial aid.
Financial Aid
All applicants are encouraged to submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) online no later than March 1 to ensure full consideration for all available funds. Spring applicants are encouraged to submit the FAFSA no later than October 1. Rutgers Federal Student Code is 002629.
Information about completing the FAFSA and other important details about funding your graduate degree can be found on the Rutgers Office of Financial Aid website.
The School of Social Work offers numerous scholarships and research assistantships to enrolled students. All admitted students will be notified by email of the scholarship and research assistantship application process and time frame. Graduate assistantships are hourly positions which average 6 hours a week at approximately $17/hr. Assistantships are available in a variety of areas at the School including research, Student Affairs, program support, and Admissions.
Merit-based scholarships are awarded at the time of admission to the School. All prospective students are considered with the submission of a timely and complete MSW application. Scholarship recipients demonstrate a competitive academic background, commitment to human service and leadership and the ability to significantly contribute to the School and the social work profession.
