A conversation on child welfare with VAWC
September 27, 2017

On Wednesday, October 11, Rutgers School of Social Work Dean Cathryn C. Potter, Dr. Judy Postmus, Director of the Center on Violence Against Women (VAWC), and Commissioner Allison Blake from the Department of Children and Family Services, will host an important discussion about engaging child welfare workers in the area of violence against women. This event will also recognize the multi-sector partnership committed to supporting survivors of domestic and sexual violence within the child welfare system.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Institute for Women’s Leadership at 162 Ryders Lane in New Brunswick. There is no charge for the event, but space is limited, so please RSVP to Melanie Hoffman at by Tuesday, October 10.

Over the past seven years, over 250 New Jersey Department of Children and Families employees have learned about the different forms of violence impact victims and intersect with the same concerns identified within the child welfare system. To broaden the audience that has access to this critical information, Verizon Wireless has invested $150,000 to translate this in-person training to an online structure for a national audience.

This commitment remains key to the success of child welfare workers beyond the borders of New Jersey. “Thanks to Verizon, we are able to put select courses online to be utilized by child welfare employees across the country,” says Postmus. “Our Center will continue to look for opportunities to support child welfare employees to effectively respond to women and children who are impacted by abuse and trauma.”

Following the discussion, there will be a brief preview of an innovative online training program developed by VAWC. Key stakeholders including Rutgers staff, Verizon Wireless representatives, community partners, an alumni of the program will showcase how these courses have impacted the community, and how this program will make those important lessons more available nationwide.
