Project Lift Up
is the only national longitudinal survey of youth and young adults designed to study exposure to SDV as well as pathways to engaging in bystander, or helping, behaviors for friends and family at risk for SDV.
This study began in 2021 (NIMH 1R01MH128269) to examine the attitudinal and contextual components that predict SDV bystander behavior, understand the impact of bystander behavior on the bystanders themselves, and examine how these trends vary for sub-groups of youth facing health disparities (i.e., sexual and gender minority (SGM), racial and ethnic minority youth). The study used mixed methods – a longitudinal survey and qualitative interviews.
is the only national longitudinal survey of youth and young adults designed to study exposure to SDV as well as pathways to engaging in bystander, or helping, behaviors for friends and family at risk for SDV.
Project Lift Up consists of 4,890 teens and young adults, aged 13-22 years, who agreed to participate in this 3-wave longitudinal study. We have an oversample of sexual (58.8%) and gender (37.3%) minority youth, as well as a diversity in terms of race, ethnicity, income and other social and structural determinants of health.
Using a mixed methods design, we have begun qualitative interviews with practitioners and the design of a public facing website to connecting research findings to communities and preventionists.
