Jessica Checo '15 spent a lot of her time on the New Brunswick campus earning her MSW degree. She made close friends, and spent time studying with them, preparing for exams, and discussing her field work at the New Jersey Department of Children and Families where she now works. On Thursday, November 30, she was reunited with several of her classmates and friends during the Annual Winter Alumni Reception.
"I hadn't realized Cynthia McCall Brantley '16 would be here," she said. "It was so nice to have time to talk, network, and reconnect with people."
Her experience is similar to the nearly 100 alumni and friends who attended. Held in the Busch Campus student center, the event featured free food, drinks, and give-aways. Food was served buffet style, in kiosks dedicated to different cuisine styles including a Mediterranean station, a make your own taco and fajita bar, old-fashioned hamburger sliders, and numerous appetizers and desserts.
Speakers included Commander Wilfredo Rodriguez '10, Professor and Director of the Center on Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) Judy Postmus, and Dean Cathryn C. Potter.
Part of the event highlighted the tenth anniversary of VAWC. The Dean congratulated Postmus and her dedicated staff on their hard work over the last decade. "Judy has been a fearless leader since day one, overseeing the team that uses research, education and community engagement."
Participants also took part in one of the event's highlights, the free photo booth and costume portion of the evening. Donning red hats, boas, and other accessories, friends gathered to take pictures as a lasting memento of the event.
"Cynthia and I actually ended up working together on a case I had with a teenage girl. It was a surprise to us but great to see her again and get to work together on something," says Checo. Checo continues and says "getting to see her tonight at AWAR is such a great opportunity to reconnect, it's such a small world."
