CE Event: Addressing Childhood Traumatic Stress in School
Featuring Aida Ismael-Lennon, PsyD
Childhood trauma is a common occurrence in our society that can have a lasting impact on the psychological wellbeing of children. Our schools particularly in urban settings are tasked with instructing our students in the core subjects while providing a safe and effective environment in which students can achieve their fullest potential. As educators, mental health professionals and administrators we are often left with an arduous task of instructing children who do not come to school equipped and ready to learn. Too often we blame the parents for our students’ difficulties and failures, but we fail to recognize the role that trauma plays on our students and often the parents’ lives, which deeply affects school preparedness. Understanding how complex trauma manifests itself in the classroom and using a preventive approach rather than reactive can help these students heal and begin to achieve their potential.
