Lunch & Learn Lecture Series--Serena Rice
The Center for Leadership and Management and the Management and Policy Concentration are pleased to present their 2015 - 2016 Lunch & Learn Lecture Series over the fall and spring semesters.
The purpose of this series is to provide the MAP students and guests with the opportunity to meet leaders and managers in the public, non-profit, and private sector. The series is an excellent opportunity for future agency managers and those interested in agency management to explore the guests’ journeys and ask questions about their experience in the management, leadership, and policy arenas.
For the fall semester, the first "Lunch and Learn" will take place in the 7th floor classroom at 390 George Street on November 4, 2015 from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm and will feature Serena Rice.
Serena Rice is a Licensed Social Worker with experience in both direct practice and advocacy. She joined the Anti-Poverty Network as Executive Director in May of 2014, and has been a member of APN since 2003. Ms. Rice has direct practice experience in providing emergency social services to vulnerable populations in Trenton, NJ, and conducting behavioral interventions with emotionally disturbed children in Santa Barbara, CA.
In 2004 she earned her Master of Social Work degree from Rutgers School of Social Work with a focus on Administration, Policy, and Planning. She then joined the Poverty Research Institute of Legal Services of New Jersey, conducting and directing research, as well as engaging in anti-poverty advocacy.
She has also conducted analyses of Census poverty data and the New Jersey State Budget. Her advocacy experience includes the policy areas of affordable housing and homelessness, hunger, cash assistance, childcare, workforce development, and energy assistance.
Prior to earning her MSW, Mrs. Rice earned a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. Partnership with Chien Research Center for Lecture
The Huamin Research Center and the Center for Leadership and Management were pleased to host a lecture titled “Donations from Wealthy People in China: Level and Changes” by Dr. Guosheng Deng from Tsinghua University.
“Tsinghua University is one of our hosting institutions for the China Study Abroad program and they have been unbelievable kind and generous in welcoming our faculty and students to their campus. This is a very important topic for both China and the US, and we welcome Dr. Deng to Rutgers,” said Chien-Chung Huang, professor and director of the Huamin Research Center.
Dr. Deng detailed how a new social class of wealthy people has emerged in China, with a 2.3 fold increase in five years of individuals with 1.64 million or more in assets. Most charitable giving in China has followed in close relationship to how the government views philanthropy. Before 1978, the Chinese government viewed charitable giving as a negative, making private donations impossible. The attitude relaxed through 1994, and now the Chinese government has progressed to positive encouragement of individuals and corporations for setting up charitable foundations.
“In the future I believe the level of donation will increase rapidly as the wealthy change their donation culture. Many will go overseas to set up charity projects, and giving in education will continue to increase,” says Dr. Deng. “Eventually the donations of wealthy people in China will equal the donations of the wealthy in other countries.”
