Nonprofits: Start-up Stories and Lessons Learned

The Center for Leadership and Management sponsored an event for MSW students featuring a conversation with the Executive Director and Founder of LUCY Outreach, Kristin Prinn, MSW, LCSW. During the event, Nonprofits: Start-up Stories and Lessons Learned, Kristin shared her experiences in the field of social work that led her to ultimately establish LUCY Outreach, a nonprofit youth development center for teens in Camden, NJ. She detailed the evolution of her nonprofit, which started as a small youth group and flourished into an organization that serves over 500 underserved youth. During the discussion, Kristin touched on a number of lessons for aspiring nonprofit leaders, stressing the value of adaptability and the importance of surrounding yourself with a motivated and competent team.

WHAT'S ON YOUR MAP: Nonprofit Managers Talk About Their Job Paths

The Center for Leadership and Management sponsored an online Zoom event geared towards MSW students, entitled WHAT’S ON YOUR MAP?: Nonprofit Managers Talk About Their Job Paths. The event aimed to promote knowledge and dialogue about career paths for MSW students who specialize in Management and Policy (MAP). A panel of social work managers talked about the various skills they developed during their time in the MSW/MAP Program at the Rutgers School of Social Work and how they now apply those skills in the field. The discussion covered a wide range of topics, addressing the responsibilities of macro social workers, the importance of advocacy and strategic planning in an organization, the role of policy practice, and the strengths and skills of social work leaders.

Pat McKernan, MSW, DSW - Chief of Staff for Gaudenzia Inc. 

Amy Bertelsen-Robles, LSW - Counselor and Anti-Bullying Specialist at Indian Fields Elementary School 

Thirjeet Matharu, MSW - Senior Program’s Manager at Wynona’s House 

Veronica Estevez, MSW, LSW - Director of Operations at Clear Conscience
