Emily Buchenhorst holds a Master’s degree in Social work from Rutgers University. Emily Is Licensed in New Jersey as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) by the Board of Social Work Examiners. Emily is also licensed as a Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC) and as a Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS) by the Board of Marriage and Family Therapy. Emily has worked across the continuum of care in substance abuse treatment from inpatient services, outpatient care and street outreach services. Emily is currently the Clinical Supervisor of the Family First Program, with Center for Family Services, an award winning (Tree of Hope, Southwest Council, 2015) program assisting women with substances use disorders, specializing in treating mothers with Child Protective services involvement. Emily’s mission and dedication is to provide service excellence to the population suffering with substance use disorders, enhance her clinical skills, and contribute to the field of social work.
Christine Caporuscio received her BA from Ithaca College and her MSW from Columbia University, and is currently a NJ Licensed Clinical Social Worker and certified NJ School Social Worker. She has completed advanced training for cognitive behavioral therapy in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, anti-bullying programming and intervention, suicide prevention, and crisis response interventions. Christine has experience working in hospital, mental health, and school settings, providing therapy and direct service linkage. Her current clinical practice is focused on adolescents and families, utilizing cognitive-behavioral and family systems theories to provide individual and group support services to students in an academic setting. She developed and implemented school climate programs to address anti-bulling and character education, and is involved in community outreach, providing psychoeducational programs for parents on topics related to adolescent social-emotional health and development. Christine is interested in concentrating her DSW studies in the areas of adolescent mental health and parenting practices.
Deborah Dumont graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Pennsylvania State University with a B.A. in Psychology. She received her M.S.S from Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research, after which she completed a year of postgraduate training in Bowen Family Systems Theory at the Princeton Family Center for Education. Deborah has substantial experience working with trauma, selfinjurious behaviors, mood disorders, eating disorders and other food and body issues. Of note, utilizing both cognitive-behavioral theory and family systems theory, Deborah has specialized in the treatment of eating disorders both at Princeton University and the University Medical Center at Princeton.
In addition, in her capacity as a trained breast feeding counselor, Deborah takes a special interest in assisting women adjusting to the challenges of a new baby in the home. She is a partner and the Director of Development at Comprehensive Mental Health Services in Pennington, N.J. where she has a special interest in working with adolescents and young adults. She plays an active role on the Behavioral Health Assessment Team at the Hopewell Valley school district providing mental health services for students in need. She has developed programming to address body image and eating related issues at the Lawrenceville School. She has volunteered her time in helping to develop a community based mental health organization called New Directions in Lawrenceville, N.J. Deborah enjoys teaching fitness classes in her spare time as a way to connect emotional and physical health. She looks forward to continuing her education as a social worker and developing herself further professionally by being a student at the DSW program at Rutgers University.
Michael Garbe is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New York State, as well as a nationally certified MAC (Master Addiction Counselor). He received his Master’s Degree from Wurzweiler-Yeshiva University, graduating with honors. He has worked in the substance abuse field as a counselor, adult program coordinator, and clinical supervisor, in the New York City area. Michael has recently transitioned into private practice where he focuses his work on assisting clients with spiritually related issues. He hopes to obtain and utilize his doctorate in social work to promote cultural awareness, and competence, in working with client’s who have spiritually oriented needs. Michael is an avid yoga practitioner and studies Himalayan Yoga Philosophy through the Himalayan Yoga Institute. He has personally witnessed the therapeutic benefits of yoga, meditation, and breath work, in conjunction with psychotherapy, and hopes to connect more clients, as well as practitioners, to the benefits of this therapeutic work.
Patricia Moody Jefferson
Patricia Moody Jefferson, MSW, LCSW-C completed her B.A.& S. in Interdisciplinary Studies from Bennett College, Greensboro, NC. She later attended Delaware State University to complete her Master’s in Social Work. Patricia is a second-generation social worker with both her father and late-paternal uncle earning their Master’s in Social Work from Rutgers University nearly 50 years ago. She has 20 years of post-MSW experience, and she has practiced social work in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia in a variety of social work settings. She is licensed in the state of Maryland by the Board of Social Work Examiners as a Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical (LCSW-C). Currently, Patricia works in an agency providing social work supervision and maintains a part-time private practice in Baltimore, MD. Patricia is married and has a six-year old son. By attending Rutgers University DSW Program, Patricia hopes to obtain specialized knowledge in clinical social work leadership, acquire innovative theoretical approaches to therapy, and to publish journal articles.
Helena D. Lewis
Helena D. Lewis obtained her BA in Biology and her MSW from Rutgers University. She is a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) and a Licensed Clinical Alcohol Drug Counselor (LCADC). Lewis developed, implemented, and supervised a drop-in center for drug-addicted prostitutes for the Community at Risk Reduction Program in Newark, New Jersey. Lewis assisted with the development of a vocational rehabilitation component for a Department of Corrections (DOC) Community Release Program for women. She also spent three years working on a CDC/HRSA Correctional Demonstration Project providing prevention case management to HIV positive male inmates. Lewis is currently the Substance Use Disorder Treatment Director for a 51 bed facility for women inmates and has over 15 years of experiences working in prisoner reentry. Lewis is the Internship Coordinator at William Paterson University and teaches Intro to Human Services, Field Placement in Sociology, and Internship in Criminal Justice. Lewis was the keynote speaker at the “Hurt to Healing: Mass Incarceration Conference,” the 2017 NASW-NJ Annual Conference, and was invited to speak at the upcoming 2017 NASW-OH Annual Conference in November.
Helena is also an award winning actress, poet, and playwright. Her one-person show, Call Me Crazy: Diary of A Mad Social Worker, chronicles her work in the social service field. Call Me Crazy won an AUDELCO for Best Solo-Performance, Best Short at the Downtown Urban Theater Festival in NY, and was festival Pick at the inaugural D.C. Black Theater Festival. Lewis has performed Call Me Crazy at the NASW-NJ Annual Conference, Wurzweiler School of Social Work, Kumble Theater at Long Island University, and the Schomburg Center in NYC.
Karie McGuire, LCSW, received her Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health from Rutgers New Brunswick. She began her career as a sexual health educator and became an AmeriCorps service member at the Rutgers Camden School of Social Work Healthy Futures Future Program. She worked for the Rutgers Future Scholars Program before going back to school where she earned a Masters degree in Social Work. Karie has worked the past three and a half years with the DreamCatcher Program, the statewide victim service provider for victims of all forms of human trafficking in New Jersey. Starting as a care manager and then moving to the role of supervisor, Karie leads the team in crisis intervention, case management, clinical services, trainings for the community, and partnering with law enforcement. Karie also works at Cooper University Hospital as a per diem medical social worker. In the past, Karie worked as an adjunct professor for Wilmington University in the Child Advocacy Program teaching courses around responding to child maltreatment and trauma. Karie’s interests include helping clients gain access to mental health services and healthcare, crisis work, human trafficking prevention/intervention, and sexual health. Karie would like to use her experience from the DSW Program to help bring awareness to the issue of human trafficking and to enhance current practices for this population.
Angela Mullane is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New York. She earned her Bachelors Degree in Psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1992. She earned her Masters in Social Work in 1998 from New York University. Ms. Mullane began her career working with children dually diagnosed with a developmental disability and psychiatric diagnosis under the auspices of The Administration for Children Services (ACS) and the NYS Office for Persons With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). Ms. Mullane worked in Early Intervention for ten years with children birth to three and their parents providing both Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and parent training, respectively. For the past thirteen years Ms. Mullane has worked as an independent provider of counseling services with preschool and school-aged children through the NYC Department of Education. She is presently in private practice in New York City with a specialized interest in working with children with anxiety using cognitive behavioral therapy techniques. Her research focus on Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections (PANDAS) is in response to a need to identify and address the increase in childhood anxiety, as well as, research and implement effective treatment approaches.
Asa Paris is a Licensed Social Worker in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. He is a practicing Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapist and Addiction Specialist. He is passionate about helping veterans, homeless, and sexual assault survivors overcome challenges and realize their desired quality of life. Mr. Paris holds an MSW from Fordham University’s School of Social Work. The concentration of his clinical training has been with Substance Use Disorder, Veteran, Adolescent, and Family populations. He is a member National Council on Alcoholism (NCADD), American Jail Association (AJA), and the Police Benevolence Association (PBA). Mr. Paris has a rich history of working with reintegration of incarcerated person and current and prior service Military personnel. His professional interests include attaining a DSW at Rutgers University that will further develop his ability to provide innovative clinical interventions in his daily practice by developing his knowledge and skill in engaged scholarship.
Jennifer Polizotto is a licensed clinical social worker and certified school social worker in New Jersey. After completing her MSW from Syracuse University, she has worked as a therapist and supervisor in community mental health agencies, practiced as a school social worker in both public and private schools, served as a social work field supervisor, and maintains a private practice. Jennifer’s area of clinical practice includes working with adolescents and families with mood disorders, anxiety, depression, academic, and relationship issues. Her therapeutic approach incorporates a variety of family systems theory, psychodynamic, and psychoanalytic techniques into treatment. Having worked in the school setting for over ten years, she is committed to helping students and families to determine the most effective use of mental health resources available in the school and in their communities. Jennifer is dedicated to deepening her clinical knowledge through research in the area of mental health services in the public schools to continue to educate students, families, and professionals.
Edith Lori Slater
Edith Lori Slater is a licensed bilingual Spanish social work clinician in New Jersey and Hawaii. She earned her BA in psychology at Montclair State University and her MSW at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Presently, she is the director of a mental health agency located in Hudson County, New Jersey that serves individuals, children, adolescents, and their families. The agency’s mission is to provide culturally responsive and solution-focused psychotherapy that is designed to enhance quality of life by addressing themes such as integrity, equanimity, respect, dignity, compassion, wellness, and effective communication. Her experience includes facilitating workshops for families, advocating for individuals who have developmental disabilities, and supporting educative and psychotherapy for refugees experiencing trauma-related mental health challenges. In addition, she provides supervision to qualified candidates seeking mental health licensure. Her experience as a social work clinician and experienced registered yoga instructor lends to a culturally responsive therapeutic approach to psychotherapy that incorporates complementary and alternative medicine as an integral aspect of the collaborative psychotherapeutic alliance.
Lauren Snedeker, LSW is a licensed social worker in both New Jersey and New York. She is a proud Alumna from the Edward J. Bloustein School of Public Health and Cook College. From Rutgers, Lauren worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as a Session Assistant for five years. While working at the hospital, Lauren received her MSW from the Silver School of Social Work at New York University.
She is currently working at the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, a national nonprofit in New York City, dedicated to providing care and services to individuals living with dementia, their families and care partners. In addition to providing support, resources and facilitating caregiver support groups, Lauren also assists in the development of continuing education programs and has spoken at professional conferences about isolation and aging, dementia and elder abuse. Lauren writes articles on age-related topics for the Social Work Today Magazine and website, and is also a member of the Advisory Council on Aging at Rutgers School of Social Work. As a member of the Advisory Council, Lauren provides feedback on the academic program and participates in school events that encourage more social workers to consider a career in aging. By attending Rutgers’ DSW program, Lauren hopes to continue to build upon her clinical and writing skills, as well as make contributions to the social work field.
Kelly Zinn is a Licensed Social Worker in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Kelly earned her Bachelors degree in Business Administration at Loyola University Maryland and worked in Human Resources prior to pursuing her MSW at The State University of New York Stony Brook. Throughout Kelly’s career in social work her focus has been on working with children and families. She has worked as the coordinator of a support group program for families that experienced sexual abuse and as a therapist in a treatment foster care program. For the past 12 years, Kelly has been employed as a school social worker at a charter school in Philadelphia. In this position, Kelly provides student support through small group and individual counseling, conducts crisis assessments, collaborates with the RtII and special education teams, provides training and support to teachers and other school staff, and works closely with the administrative team to address student mental health needs. Kelly has continuously committed herself to the mentorship of social work students, supervising interns on the bachelors and masters levels.
