Welcome to the Bachelor of Arts in Social Work
We are looking forward to your participation in Rutgers School of Social Work activities and, ultimately, to your contributions as a social work professional.
Orientation for the School is held in September and you can expect to receive additional details about this mandatory event during the summer. If you are a New Brunswick student, your social work advisor will be Dr. DuWayne Battle, Director for the Baccalaureate Social Work Program, at email@example.com. If you are a Camden or Mays Landing student, Dr. Sara Plummer is your advisor and can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org. You are strongly encouraged to meet with your advisor periodically to assess your progress in the program.
*Please note if you are a transfer student, you must first be admitted into Rutgers University before declaring a social work major.
Academic Requirements for Continued Enrollment in the Social Work Major
In order to maintain continuous enrollment in the major, you must achieve a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA), with no grade lower than a C in all social work core courses. A 2.0 cumulative GPA is required in courses making up the liberal arts foundation. Eligibility for membership in the Phi Alpha Honor Society requires that you achieve a 3.5 GPA.
Field work is an integral part of your social work experience. You will begin planning for your placement during your second semester in the major, and begin field hours in year two. Placement sites frequently require a background check and/or drug screening. Students unable to meet these requirements and secure a field placement may not be able to continue in the social work major.
