Frequently Asked Questions

Prospective Students     Current Students     Former Students

Prospective Students:

What are the requirements to be admitted to the MSW Program?

Advanced Standing:

You must be a graduate of an undergraduate School of Social Work that is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

Two Year or Four-Year Program:

You must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university. We recommend a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and minimum of one to two years of paid or volunteer experience in the social work profession.

Can I apply to the MSW program to start in the Spring semester?

No, our Program begins on two cycles.

If you hold an undergraduate degree in social work from an accredited school of social work, you can apply for the Advanced Standing Program, which begins in May of each year.
Application Deadline February 1st.

If you do not hold an undergraduate degree in social work from an accredited school of social work, you can apply to our full or part-time program, which begins only in the Fall semester.
Application Deadline March 1st.

I missed the deadline to apply to the School of Social Work. Do I have to wait until next year to apply?

You have several options:

One: Pre-Admission meetings are held in the Fall and Spring semesters. Please call the Office of Student Services at 732- 932-7126 for dates and times.

Two: You may want to consider enrolling in the School of Social Work's Continuing Education Courses called Professional Credit Courses (PCC) on a non-matriculated basis. These are fully transferable courses once admitted as a matriculated student in the MSW program, but they do not guarantee admission to the Program. The telephone number is 732-445-3173.

Three: You will be required to fulfill a basic statistics requirement as a part of the MSW program. You may wish to enroll in an introductory statistics course either through the School of Social Work's Continuing Education Program, or at a local community college.

I have completed a Statistics course in a previous program. Can the Statistics requirement be waived?

Yes, if the course was taken no more than six years prior to the date of matriculation, and you received a grade of "C" or better if undergraduate or "B" if graduate. You would need to submit an official transcript, a course syllabus, and a completed Statistics Waiver form to the Office of Student Services.

If the Statistics course was taken more than six years prior to the date of matriculation, you may arrange to take an exemption test through the Statistics Department. If you pass this test, the requirement can be waived. The Office of Student Services must be notified, in writing, that you passed this test, and you would need to complete a Statistics waiver form.

I hold a master's degree from another institution. I would like to meet with an advisor to determine if any of those courses will transfer to my MSW program.

We normally evaluate transfer credits only after you have been admitted to the program.

You should send us the syllabus from each course under consideration. There is no need to meet with an advisor at this time since this evaluation can be made by reviewing the syllabi.

What are Professional Credit Courses?

Professional Credit Courses are courses offered through the School of Social Work's Office of Continuing Education.

These courses are non-matriculating, foundation, and elective courses that are fully transferable if, and when, you are admitted as a matriculated student into the MSW Program, as long as you receive a B or better.

You can take up to six (6) courses for a total of eighteen (18) credit hours; however, only one elective can be transferred from the PCC to the MSW program.

You can obtain additional information on the PCC program by calling 732-445-3173.

Can I finish the program in one year?

Yes. If you are admitted as an Advanced Standing student, you would enter the program in May/June in order to complete two foundation courses prior to the fall semester. If you are a full-time student, you would complete the advanced program in three semesters (Summer, Fall and Spring) so you could graduate in May.

If you are not Advanced Standing, then the program will take a minimum of two years.

Can I enroll as a part-time student?

Yes, a part-time program is available.

Advanced Standing students can complete the program in two years (one summer and four semesters) on a part-time basis.

If you are not Advanced Standing, you can complete the program in four years. The typical two year full-time program can be completed in four years.

Are there classes on weekends?

No.

Can I take the classes on other campuses?

Yes, but you have priority to the classes on the campus you are assigned.

Current Students:

Do I need a Rutgers email address?

The School of Social Work requires each currently enrolled student to have a Rutgers-provided email address. An account on one of the Rutgers systems is required even in the event that you already use a different email provider (i.e AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail). It is recommended that you check this account often, as important School of Social Work and University-wide announcements will be automatically sent there.

Information regarding student email accounts is available at the following website address: http://nbcs.rutgers.edu/services/account/index.php

How do I obtain an ID card?

The photo ID card, which serves as the official Rutgers identification, includes the library barcode for borrowing books and provides access to recreational centers.

In order to receive a new card, a student must be a registered student and show a valid form of ID. Acceptable forms of identification include driver's license, passport and social security card.

Information regarding the RUconnection card is available at the RUconnection website address, www.rci.rutgers.edu/~ruconxn/.

When may I register for classes?

You will be advised each semester of the dates of registration.

How do I register for classes?

How do I find out about my grades?

You may access your grades through the touchtone telephone registration system (RTTRS) or on-line after your instructor has submitted them. You should allow several days for the grades to be entered before attempting to check them using RTTRS.

How may I obtain a current transcript?

How may I change my Full-time/Part-time status or change my track?

You must complete a Request For Change in Enrollment Status form and send it to the Assistant Dean for Student Services. You will receive written notification of the decision.

What do I have to do to Graduate?

A completed Curriculum Summary Form, signed by your Advisor, must be submitted to the Assistant Dean for Student Services for final approval.
