Academic Programs and Requirements

Rutgers' School of Social Work has been preparing social workers for meaningful careers for more than four decades. Discover why a degree in social work from Rutgers can make a difference to you—and help you to make a difference.
Bachelor of Arts
The school offers a B.A. with a major in social work, which is a professional degree program that prepares graduates for beginning social work practice.
  • Offered through Rutgers' Camden College of Arts and Sciences in Camden and through Livingston College in New Brunswick/Piscataway.
Master of Social Work (M.S.W.)
The school's largest program prepares skilled direct-service providers to function in both public and private sectors of social welfare; and also prepares students for advanced social work practice, including administrative leadership roles in the state's social welfare departments and agencies, and at all levels of government, as well as in the voluntary sector.
  • Offered in Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick (the full range of the school's offerings is available only in New Brunswick).
  • Full-time students complete the program within two years of matriculation.
Advanced Standing
The school offers an advanced-standing M.S.W. program for students who have earned a baccalaureate degree in social work from an undergraduate social work program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
  • Advanced-standing students complete the program in one year following successful completion of any additional courses required to fulfill the professional foundation.
Part-Time M.S.W. Option
A structured M.S.W. part-time option is available on Rutgers' three regional campuses. Students are required to take a minimum of 6 credits each term and to complete the program within four years of matriculation. Advanced-standing M.S.W. students are required to complete the structured part-time M.S.W. option within two years of matriculation.
Dual Degrees
The Juris Doctor/Master of Social Work (J.D/M.S.W.) is an accelerated dual-degree program offered by the school in conjunction with Rutgers' schools of law in Camden and Newark. Click here for more information.

The Master of Social Work/Master of Divinity (M.S.W./M.Div.) is offered in conjunction with Princeton Theological Seminary.
