Volunteer opportunities for students over the summer of 2012 at Haven Youth Center, Inc.

May 11th, 2012

Haven is an organization that caters to youth who are infected and affected by HIV and AIDS. Our mission is to provide educational, social, and recreational services in order to support healthy, age-appropriate development and transition into adulthood. These services are available to help decrease social isolation, improve self-esteem, enhance communication skills, and encourage the development of healthy peer relationships among a population that may often feel stigmatized in other community settings.

Haven is currently working on a summer camp that is conducted for adolescents infected and affected by HIV and AIDS. Camp Bright Feathers (CBF) is a weeklong, overnight camp for youth ages 7-18 that will be held from Sunday, August 19th to Friday, August 24th, 2012. CBF is intended to reinforce concepts of maintaining positive self-image while fostering healthy relationship building skills through the use of educational and recreational activities. In addition, we are now recruiting camp counselors! They will be responsible for a total of 4-6 kids, directing campers during activities, promoting positive attitudes, and most importantly building trusting relationships with campers. It is imperative for our counselors to be enthusiastic self-starters with a vested interest in ensuring that our campers receive a fulfilling camp experience.

This is a great opportunity for your students to be involved in their community and to leave a lasting impact on CBF’s campers. Thank you for your time and efforts and I look forward to working with your students.

Sincerely,

Meriam Mikre
