Established in 1954, the school has a distinguished record of instruction, research, and public service. Classes were first offered during the Depression to meet the state's need for social workers. Today, the school offers undergraduate and graduate-professional degree programs, holds classes on Rutgers' three regional campuses, and is affiliated with more than 800 social service agencies throughout the New Jersey/New York metropolitan area.

The school offers classes on Rutgers' three regional campuses in Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick. The Office of the Dean is located at 536 George Street, on the university's historic New Brunswick campus. Each campus is close to major highways and rail systems, and within easy commuting distance of New York City and Philadelphia.
