About the Rutgers School of Social Work
Rutgers School of Social Work provides an extraordinary combination of nationally recognized faculty and outstanding field education opportunities. Founded in 1766 and located in the heart of the New Jersey-New York-Pennsylvania region, Rutgers University has always offered students a top-notch, affordable education. As a part of Rutgers since 1954, the School of Social work carries on that tradition, turning passionate, committed students into leaders who serve society in policy, academic, clinical, and corporate settings.
Our mission is to develop and disseminate knowledge through social work research, education, and training that promotes social and economic justice and strengthens individual, family, and community well-being in this diverse and increasingly global environment of New Jersey and beyond.
Our faculty are a dynamic community of over 200 leaders — tenured professors advancing the field of social work through original, published research and adjunct professors actively working in local communities and bringing those experiences into the classroom.
Our student body is ethnically, economically and geographically diverse. Most of our students are recent college graduates, while others are looking to change careers or enhance their social work education. They are united by their pursuit of a rigorous academic experience and their commitment to social change.
We believe that students who are qualified for and passionate about a career in social work should have the ability to pursue one. That is why we provide our students with as much flexibility as possible by offering affordable BA, MSW, DSW, PhD and continuing education programs at each of Rutgers' three campuses (Newark, New Brunswick and Camden). In addition to a full-time degree program, we offer part-time, evening and weekend options. Our programs aim to inspire and motivate students to pursue leadership roles in a variety of settings.
To ensure that we have the greatest possible community impact, we maintain a host of partnerships with public agencies, local non-profit organizations, foundations and socially active corporations.
As one of the largest schools of social work in the country, our reach is vast. We train a cadre of nearly 1,000 professional social workers annually. Our graduates go on to work in government, the nonprofit sector and the corporate world, doing everything from counseling victims of abuse to leading human resources department at private corporations. In addition to maintaining an extensive alumni network around the country, we leverage our many community partnerships to create change locally.
