Raymond Sanchez Mayers (Ph.D., Brandeis University; M.S.W., Barry University) is associate professor in the School of Social Work and an affiliated faculty member of the Department of Latino and Hispanic Caribbean Studies. Prior to entering social work, he worked in a managerial capacity in the for-profit sector. As a social worker, he has worked with substance abusing clients in treatment programs and employee assistance programs. He has also worked with Mexican migrant and Latino immigrant populations.
His areas of interest include geographic information systems (GIS), nonprofit management and financial management, and issues related to Latinos. He is particularly interested in uses of GIS for the human services, believing that an understanding of geography can help social workers apprehend social problems and strategies for alleviating them, and in the use of geospatial statistics in social work research. His current research includes predictors and correlates of perceptions of discrimination by Latinos, human service organizational response to Latino immigration, and use of geospatial statistics to examine phenomena of interest to social work. He has authored four books, including Hispanic Substance Abuse and Financial Management for Nonprofit Human Service Organizations, and is currently working on a book on GIS usage and applications for health and human service organizations. His work has appeared in Journal of Applied Social Sciences, Journal of Family Relations, Journal of Drug Issues, Children and Youth Services Review, Administration in Social Work, and other publications.
