The Psychodynamics of Shame Management

This presentation will utilize clinical case vignettes to illustrate three aspects of the social and. psychodynamics of shame management First, the psychodynamics of shame management in the engagement and termination phases of the clinical encounter and in the formation of the working alliance will be considered. Then ,an argument for the application of this clinical knowledge to understanding shame in a myriad social work practice setting will be developed. Finally, recommendations on how to use our growing interdisciplinary understanding of shame from the frameworks of neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, and psychoanalysis in social work practice and research will be presented.
